A man was caught drink driving after he drove his girlfriend to a police station to pick up her licence – which she lost for the same offence.

The 22-year-old man pulled up in front of the police station in Abbotsford, in Canada’s British Columbia province in his black pick-up truck with his 21-year-old companion.

But after parking in a police space an officer in reception immediately suspected the woman had been drinking.

// The truck was then found to contain opened and unopened beer cans and was later towed away for illegal parking.

The driver failed a breathalyser test and had his licence confiscated.

Constable Ian MacDonald said the pair had not tried to hide the fact they had had a good weekend.

“That might not be the best time to go and retrieve your driver’s licence,” he told the Province newspaper.

“The Abbotsford Police are preparing for the couple’s next visit, this time to collect the man’s license.

“We are hopeful that they will arrive by taxi.”

The man, identified as Roland Mitchell, an Aboriginal man from a remote community in the Australia’s western desert, had been sniffing petrol at a house with several others when two police officers arrived and asked him to come out.

According to authorities, he ran outside carrying a lighter and a plastic bottle of what they believed was petrol. When he refused to stop running towards them, police say, he was Tasered by one officer.

Family members who witnessed the incident say that the Taser hit him on the bridge of his nose, and he was engulfed in flames.

A police spokeswoman said that the two officers immediately went to Mr Mitchell’s aid, with the male officer smothering the flames with his arms and the female officer going to fetch water.

Later, a crew from the Royal Flying Doctor Service airlifted Mr Mitchell to a hospital in Perth to be treated for burns to 20 per cent of his body.

Explosive Air Bed?

A German who tried to fix his leaky air mattress managed to blow up his apartment instead, the fire brigade in the western city of Duesseldorf said on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old man used tyre repair solvent to plug a hole in his airbed and left it overnight.

But it blew up when he went to inflate it the next day.

‘A spark from the electric air pump ignited it,’ a fire brigade spokesman said.

The blast pushed his living room wall into the building’s stairwell and caused extensive damage to walls, windows and furniture.

Fire fighters evacuated the 12-apartment building and a neighbouring housing block while they checked for structural damage.

The man suffered burns on his arms, while a three-year-old girl suffered first degree burns.
